How is it the school holidays already?! It’s true what they say, time flies and we now find ourselves preparing for another two weeks of activities to keep the little ones entertained these holidays. Don’t fret – we are here to help. We have pulled together a list of some of our favourite activities to keep the kids busy. Try some of these boredom busters from the comfort of your own home.
DIY Play-dough
By adding essential oils to your play dough, it is not only a fantastic smelling play session, but it comes with all the benefits of aromatherapy too! This easy, no cook recipe is fun for the little ones these holidays.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 10-12 drops of your essential oil of choice (we think Lemon works best)
- 1.5 cups boiling water
- Food colouring – optional
INSTRUCTIONS
- Mix the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together in a large bowl.
- Combine your essential oil with the vegetable oil and mix into the dry ingredients.
- Boil the water and add food colouring directly to water.
- Pour 1 cup of your boiling water into the mixture and stir, adding the additional 1/2 cup slowly until desired consistency is reached.
- Knead for 3-5 minutes or until dough is smooth and perfectly squishy for play.
- Enjoy!
Rainbow Sugar Scrub
This is a fun and colourful recipe that you can create with your kids which is safe to use on their skin and works as a great natural body exfoliator.
INGREDIENTS
- Granulated Sugar - 1 cup (Organic)
- Pure Honey - 1/4 cup
- Olive Oil - 1/3 cup
- Food colour
- Essential Oils of choice (try Orange)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Divide the sugar equally in different containers depending on the number of colours chosen.
- Similarly, divide honey and olive oil equally among each bowl with the sugar.
- Add 1-2 drops of food colouring to each bowl. One colour for one bowel.
- Add your desired essential oil to each bowl. It is fun idea to match the colour with the scent (eg. yellow for Lemon, red for Rose).
- Mix everything well in each bowl.
- Take a clean glass container to store the sugar scrub, add coloured sugar scrub one on top of the other. Slightly pressing down each layer.
- Sugar scrub is ready to be used. We suggest using it in the shower as an exfoliating scrub for your body (not your face).
DIY Diffuser Bead Jewellery
Kids will love making these jewellery sets which double as on-the-go essential oil diffusers. They make great gifts so grab your kids and head to the local craft store to choose their beads!
YOU WILL NEED
- Beads in the size and colour of your choice (we think beads mostly in the same size work best)
- Lava beads
- Stretchy bead cord
- Craft adhesive
- Essential Oil of choice (we suggest Lavender)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut the stretchy bead cord a few inches more than needed to make it easier to tie at the end. If you don’t know the exact size of the wrist you are making it for, that’s ok, using the stretchy cord allows for a bit of a range. We suggest adult sized bracelet about 9 inches and kid-sized ones about 7.5 inches.
- Tape one end of the stretchy cord to a table, this will make it easier for the kids to string the beads
- Design your bracelets and lay out your beads first, making sure to measure the length. Use 3-5 lava beads for each of the bracelets by putting them down first and designing the bracelet around them.
- String the beads in your designed pattern onto the cord and tie it together using 2-3 knots, making sure to pull each knot tightly. We suggest adding a dab of adhesive to the knot to lock it in place – this should be done by an adult.
- Place one drop of Essential Oil on each bead – we love using Lavender for its calming benefits.
Repurpose Candle Jars
If you love LeRêve Candles as much as we do, you will have lots of empty jars hanging around your home, but those beautiful jars do not need to go to waste! So, gather them up and try this with your kids for a home DIY project.
Removing the wax
- This should be done by an adult
- Place your candle in the freezer – this should cause the leftover wax to harden and shrink; any left-over wax can be scraped out with a spoon, then wash the jar in soapy water.
Once the jar is clear of the wax and has been washed out you could try repurposing them these ways:
- Turn them into pot plants
– Add some soil and your favourite succulents. These jars are the perfect size for leafy additions to your home. - Tidy your kid’s bathroom vanities
– These jars make perfect and aesthetic holders for your bathroom sinks. We love using them as toothbrush holders or makeup brush holders - Pencil tin
– Help your kids decorate the jar using stickers and markers to turn them into awesome pencil holders for around the home or something you can bring to your office to remind you of them.
